‘Simply touching a difficult memory with some slight willingness to heal begins to soften the holding and tension around it’ Stephen Levine
In EMDR work, one of the top healing modalities for trauma, they refer to Big T Trauma and little t trauma.
Big T Trauma refers to one-time events or intensified events such as war, car accidents, surgery, near death experience, loss of a loved one, etc.
Little t traumas are repetitive ego wounding experiences that create a painful thought pattern lodged in the psyche.
The essential goal of treating trauma is to help one return to a personal homeostasis and centered place within the self, along with a calm nervous system. Once this state is known, one can relate to their memories from a new perspective.
Working with Trauma
We work on de-energizing the emotional charge off of memories and releasing over stimulus (hypervigelance) in the body. I use EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing), Meditation, Expressive Art Therapy and Narrative Therapy approaches in treating trauma.
